Work-based experiences (WBEs), also referred to as work-based learning, are currently one of the most influential ideas in public higher education and workforce development policy around the world, and internships are often promoted as being a win-win-win situation:

Our vision is that all students will have access to, and participate in at least one Work-based Experience (WBE) while attending GateWay.

Options

Clinical Experience

Clinical Experience

Hands on experience in a clinical setting with direct patient care rather than theoretical or lab studies.

*10 - 60 hours, embedded or assigned as part of a course or program with faculty supervision

Co-Op

Co-Op

Provides academic credit for structured, full-time job experience while maintaining full-time student status.

*Full-time work during a 6 month period

Externship

Externship

A short-term experience with a working professional to observe and get a preview of the day-to-day activities.

*40 - 120 hours, can be completed over a series of weeks

Field Experience

Field Experience

Combines course content with "real world" application through observations, interactions, and hands-on activities.

*20 - 40 hours, depending on the program/course

Internships

Internships

Integrates “knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting”, as defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

*80 hours/credit-hour within 16-week semester (credit bearing) or 10 - 40 hours/week, during semester or summer (paid/unpaid)

Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing

particular occupation or profession to see if it might be suitable for them by seeking advice from a working professional.

*4 - 8 hours per experience, can include career interviews

Preceptorship

Preceptorship

Practical training under the supervision of an expert or specialist embedded within the course/program and require faculty approval.

*10 - 100 hours over a 16-week semester
