Mission Statement

Counseling Faculty at GateWay Community College are a talented and diverse team of highly trained professionals. Our team offers a wide variety of services designed to help students with assessing issues and concerns, problem solving, and decision making as it pertains to attaining academic, career and personal goal achievement. Individual counseling services are voluntary, private, and free to currently enrolled students at GateWay Community College. Our Counseling Faculty are highly trained professionals who have years of experience and are ready to help you address life management challenges related to your college experience.

Counseling Courses

Introduction to College, Career and Personal Success

Focus on student success through exploration of academic, career and life skills. Includes study of goal-setting/success strategies, academic mindset and financial literacy. Develop an education/career plan utilizing career assessments and other college resources.

Focus on student success through exploration of academic, career, and life skills. Includes study of goal-setting/success strategies, academic mindset, interpersonal skills, financial literacy, self-care strategies, diverse perspectives, and campus tools and resources. Develop an education/career plan utilizing career assessments and other college resources.

Introduction to Counseling

Introduction to the field of counseling with a focus on skills and competencies needed as a mental health practitioner. Foundations of counseling including counseling theories, ethical considerations, prevention and intervention topics, and multicultural counseling practices.

The Counselor in a Multicultural Society

Current theories and research on culture, race and ethnicity, gender and other aspects of cultural diversity in a multicultural society through the lens of counseling. Focus on personal perspectives, will explore themes, theories, topics and research related to power, privilege and oppression in the United States as applied to counseling discipline.

Introduction to Counseling Skills

Introduction to basic skills and techniques used in the counseling field. Focuses on active listening, self-awareness, and other related skills.

Career and Professional Preparation for the Helping Professions

Overview of the process of career and life planning through self-awareness for students interested in helping fields. Focus on current occupational trends and outlook, the learning models of the individual, the world of work, and decision-making. Emphasis on individual application and workplace diversity. Design materials for use in the professional world such as resumes, online presence, career portfolio.

Intro to Multiculturalism

Examination of the multiple cultures and subcultures within the contemporary United States. Personal exploration of awareness and appreciation of multiculturalism. Activities for experiencing diverse cultural perspectives. Critical thinking skills for recognizing, analyzing, and mediating cultural and psychological factors impacting conflict and accord between diverse cultures through written and oral discourse.

Meditation & Wellness

Physiology of meditation and its effects on physical and mental health; scholastic abilities and interpersonal relationships; differentiation between meditation and other relaxation techniques.

Soccer

Basic skills and game strategy of soccer. Class emphasis on competition and drills.

Soccer - Advanced

To improve upon intermediate skills and game strategy of soccer at the advanced level. Class emphasis on competition and drills.

Health Living

Health and wellness and their application to an optimal life style. Explores current topics of interest such as stress management, nutrition, fitness, and environmental health. Evaluates common risk factors associated with modern lifestyles.

Principles of Physical Fitness and Wellness

Stress basic, lifetime health and skill-related components of fitness to achieve total wellness. Topics include nutrition, weight control, exercise and aging, cardiovascular and cancer risk reduction, stress management, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse control, and overall management of personal health and lifestyle habits to achieve the highest potential for well-being.

Counseling FAQs

Academic Advisors are faculty or staff members who assist with academic information and help you with developing an educational plan and course of study.

Counseling Faculty are faculty members who are trained in counseling to help students with personal, educational, and occupational skills. They can help you develop better study skills, manage stress, respond to crises, and set goals. Counseling faculty also work with other departments as consultants and trainers.

Counseling faculty maintain student privacy as outlined by FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) guidelines, and, like other college representatives, may release information as permitted by FERPA or in circumstances involving the safety of students or others. Counseling faculty are mandated by Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to report knowledge of gender-based or sexual discrimination that involves MCCCD students or employees, including sexual harassment or sexual violence that creates a hostile environment on campus.

Counseling services are FREE and available for all students who are enrolled at GateWay Community College.
