Cost of Attendance

Cost of Attendance

Each year, the GateWay Community College Financial Aid Office establishes standard student budgets based on institutional costs and estimated costs of living, referred to as a student’s Cost of Attendance. The Cost of Attendance, also known as a student’s budget, is determined by several factors, including enrollment status, residency status, and living arrangements. By comparing the Cost of Attendance to the student’s Student Aid Index (SAI), the Financial Aid Office can assess the student's need.

  • The amount of financial aid that you receive as a student cannot exceed GateWay Community College's Cost of Attendance.
  • Financial Need is determined by your Cost of Attendance (COA) minus your Student Aid Index (SAI).
  • COA - SAI = Financial Need

The budgets reflect typical expense patterns for GWCC students. Some students will spend more than the standard amounts, while others will spend less, depending on individual lifestyles and circumstances. Eligibility for financial aid, however, is based on standard budget allowances, not on individual preferences and spending habits.

These figures represent the costs for the Fall and Spring semesters for students registered in half-time to full-time enrollment. Budgets costs are for a 9-month academic year, which includes a 16-week Fall Semester and a 16-Week Spring Semester. Single-semester budgets are based on 4 ½ months, which includes either a 16-week Fall semester or a 16-week Spring Semester. Students enrolled in modular courses in the Fall and/or Spring semester will receive a prorated budget, as modular courses are those with beginning and end dates that do not span the entire 16-week semester. Budgets in the Summer will be prorated based on the actual weeks of instruction that a student is in class.

For questions regarding less than half-time enrollment, one-semester, summer, or modular budgets, please contact the Financial Aid Office. If you have expenses beyond those included in the cost of attendance (COA), we may be able to adjust your COA and award additional aid, typically in the form of additional student loans, if you have not yet reached the yearly limit. For questions, please contact our office at finaid@gatewaycc.edu.
