GateWay Community College proudly celebrated the first graduating class of the Uniquely Abled Academy (UAA), a one-of-a-kind program in Arizona designed to prepare neurodiverse students for careers in CNC machining.

Neurodiverse individuals may learn, think, and experience the world in different ways. These differences are not deficits but strengths that bring unique value to the workplace. Many neurodiverse students demonstrate strong focus, attention to detail, and technical ability that align naturally with careers in advanced manufacturing.

Through a tiered training model, students earned nationally recognized credentials, including the Haas CNC Mill Operator Certificate and HAAS CNC Lathe Operator Certificate. Several graduates completed multiple levels of certification and have already received job offers from local employers. Others plan to continue their education and training at GateWay.

This versatile program is guided by expert faculty with real-world industry experience, helping students build confidence, gain hands-on skills, and take ownership of their success. The program equips graduates with a usable, in-demand skill set that opens the door to apprentice-level positions and long-term career growth.

“This group has not only grown in their skills but in their confidence,” said Program Director Dave Zamora. “They are perfectly suited for this industry. Watching them discover their potential and take that into the workforce is what this program is all about.”

The impact goes beyond the classroom. UAA has helped shape the way GateWay supports and connects with neurodiverse learners and is gaining attention beyond Arizona. With interest now reaching international audiences, the program is helping to lead the way in inclusive workforce development.

The next cohort begins in August, continuing GateWay’s commitment to preparing every student for a meaningful career and a brighter future.
