The second annual Making Music Fest, hosted by the Phoenix Forge makerspace, is happening Friday, April 4, 2025 from 6-9:00 p.m. This free, all-ages event is a showcase of artists and musicians from across Arizona who are creating hand-crafted instruments to make music from traditional to experimental. Musically-curious First Friday attendees should stop by Phoenix Forge to hear from four unique performers, get their hands (and ears) on hand-made instruments and sound experiences, create their own music and music-themed craft projects, and shop local music at record store popup Stinkweeds Records.
Non-profit, independent music organization The Trunk Space is also turning the makerspace into a concert venue, with a full evening of performances featuring local artists Caleb Daley, Michael Krassner, Joe Willie Smith, INADRM, and students from the PVCC Singer/Songwriters program.
For those who are looking for something a little quieter, they are also hosting a lecture and performance by Hannah Mayree and Súle Greg Wilson of the Black Banjo Reclamation project on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 6-8:00 p.m. Their talk, Making Roots Music and the Future of Folk will explore histories of music across the African diaspora and the Black Banjo Reclamation project's work of fabricating gourd banjos.
