Ruth Mayagoitia, GateWay Student

Every year on November 8, first generation college students are celebrated at colleges across the country. According to FirstGen Forward, the day commemorates the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, an act that created federal financial aid programs including TRIO Student Support Services, which help provide postsecondary access and extra support for first-generation college students.

At GateWay, we have a large number of first gen students and know the extra challenges that being the first in your family to attend college can present. In fact, for Fall 2024, 67.08% of the total students currently enrolled identify as first gen. Yet for students like Ruth Mayagoitia, these challenges don’t stop progress. Currently the 2024-25 Student Leadership Council Chair, Ruth is a great example of students who create their own path for success.

A first-year student at GateWay, we talked with Ruth about her educational experience thus far. Here’s her story and advice for others taking the leap as a first gen student:

Ruth Mayagoitia, GateWay Student

“My name is Ruth Mayagoitia and I went to Camelback High School. Like most, I was not sure what to do after I graduated high school. College seemed like something that was out of reach because of how expensive it is.

However, community college presented another opportunity for me to continue my education due to the affordable costs. Since I wanted to pursue a career in radiologic technology, I decided that Gateway was the best fit for me because of its reputable healthcare programs.

Starting college was a big deal in my family since my parents did not receive an education past high school. They left their home country and loved ones behind in hopes of a better life in the United States. So, I do not want to waste their efforts by not taking advantage of the opportunities they fought to give me.

Sometimes I feel lost and have no idea what I am doing. I cannot turn to my family for help in things related to college. Even though I was scared, I put myself out there and got to know a lot of amazing people. By making these connections with others, I have more people I can rely on.

So, do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to meet new people and gain experiences that will help you out in the long run.”

Ruth is already a leader and has many milestones and achievements ahead. She also isn’t alone at GateWay, where there are many services available to meet her personal and educational needs.
