GateWay Community College has partnered with Boys & Girls Club of the Valley to launch the Trades Bootcamp Program for teens through the AZYouthforce initiative. This program is designed to help teens make informed decisions about their career paths and connect them with potential paid internships with quality employers.
The Trades Bootcamp Program offers teens a unique opportunity to explore trades such as welding, HVAC, auto body repair, and CNC machining. Participants will gain hands-on experience and learn essential safety techniques required for job sites.
“Our collaboration with Boys & Girls Club of the Valley and the AZYouthforce initiative is a pivotal step in addressing the skills gap in the trades industry,” said Michael Tapscott, Instructional Services Supervisor for clock hour programs at GateWay. “By providing teens with hands-on experience and exposure to various trades, we are not only preparing them for successful careers but also contributing to the sustainability and growth of these essential industries.”
One participant highlighted the HVAC segment as their favorite part of the bootcamp, saying, “I’ve always been interested in HVAC, and this program gave me valuable insights into the training needed to pursue a career in the field.”
This initiative aligns with the broader trend of Gen Z moving away from traditional four-year college paths. According to a 2023 report by the ECMC Group, 60% of Gen Z high school graduates are exploring alternative education paths, such as vocational training or apprenticeships. Additionally, the demand for skilled trades workers is growing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in trades will grow by 6% from 2021 to 2031, outpacing the average for all occupations.
GateWay Community College is committed to providing comprehensive education and training opportunities. The Trades Bootcamp Program also emphasizes mentorship, allowing participants to learn from experienced professionals in the field. This approach ensures that students not only gain technical skills but also develop the confidence and work ethic required in the workforce. By offering a well-rounded experience, the program aims to inspire and guide teens towards fulfilling and prosperous careers.
