GateWay is hosting our fourth annual National HSI Week. In this article, GANAS alumni, Vale Favela Rodriguez, shares her thoughts on HSI Week and Hispanic Heritage Month.
1. Can you describe your experience in higher education as a Latinx individual?
As a Latinx student, navigating the higher education system has been challenging, but with the right support, I was able to start my fall semester smoothly. One of the struggles I face is explaining to my parents what my next two years will look like and how everything works. No matter how much I explain, they're always curious about every detail.
2. How has your Hispanic heritage or culture shaped your life and who you are?
My culture has taught me to view life realistically, knowing that money and luxury won’t always be guaranteed. It’s about seeking new opportunities, working hard for what you want, and understanding both what it means to have nothing and to have something.
3. What is something you feel people should be more aware of?
One thing people should be aware of is the power of networking. Many of us don’t realize how important it is to put ourselves out there and make connections that could lead to future opportunities. Always push yourself to strive for more, and never let anyone tell you that you aren’t capable.
4. What advice would you give to Hispanic students currently enrolled in the same program that you are/were in?
My advice is to get involved! Join clubs, programs—anything that interests you. It’s a great way to relieve stress and build friendships. Most importantly, make sure you have a strong support system!
