When you think of the field of psychology, outdoor enthusiast doesn't usually come to mind, but after years of research and study on the psychological benefits of connecting with nature, Dr. Andy Lenartz at GateWay Community College has become somewhat of a local expert on the topic and on one park in particular.

In 2019-2020 during Lenartz’s sabbatical, he honed his research focused on the connection between psychological well-being and nature. The outcome of some of this division chair and Psychology faculty member’s work will be published in September in his first book, titled South Mountain Park and Preserve: A guide to the trails, plants, and animals in Phoenix's most popular city park.

The book will guide readers through the extensive history of South Mountain Park, the park's ecosystem, and provide information on the many trails in each of the park's four sections.

"This book is part of my personal and professional goal to encourage individuals to develop a connection to nature,” said Lenartz. “South Mountain Park is accessible for most residents of the Valley, and this guidebook will help those new to outdoor adventure do so safely and responsibly."

As a resident of Phoenix who lives close to the park, Lenartz has seen first-hand the impact nature exposure can have on both physical and mental well-being. Formally studying the subject for the past five years, Lenartz hopes the book will impact others the way the park has affected him.

"South Mountain Park has special meaning for my family and I. It is where we have celebrated accomplishments, recovered from setbacks and spend a great deal of our time. Living by the park, I have the chance to run, bike, hike, work, eat and spend time in the park several days each week," said Lenartz.

When asked about his experience writing the book, Lenartz shared, "As the first full book I have written, the entire process has been memorable. I want to encourage others to pursue challenging personal goals by taking one step at a time with the end in sight. It is indeed possible to achieve anything you set your mind to."

With the help of his new book, many Valley residents will be able to do just that, one step at a time.
