GateWay Community College announced the expansion of its footprint and the spring opening of a new site at 18th Street and Van Buren last December. But due to the pandemic, the Spring 2020 opening was postponed, until now.
In July, the college moved forward with opening, with select programs initially. The new site, known as GateWay Community College at 18th Street, is a three-story facility on the campus of the former St. Luke's Hospital. It is filled with classrooms, labs, simulation rooms, and more.
Healthcare programs and services will be offered at the location to accommodate the growth of existing programs and the creation of new ones.
Programs coming in August and September include:
Medical Billing and Coding
Medical Interpreter-Spanish
Medication Assistant
Nurse Assisting Day/Evening/Weekend
Pharmacy Technician
Veteran's LPN Bridge Course
And coming in mid-fall a new program:
In addition, this location will be the new home of the Healthcare United at GateWay (HUG) Clinic, a pro bono clinic where students, with instructor supervision, perform physical therapy, respiratory care and ultrasound guidance and services. The move from the college's Washington Campus will allow the HUG Clinic to expand healthcare services that align with college programs.
Separately, an additional Safe Patient Handling (SaPHE Lab) will be available to train students as well as professionals in the healthcare and nursing industry.
And lab space for the new Occupational Therapy Assisting program -- which launched in January 2020 -- as well as the Polysomnography (sleep study) will eventually occupy space on the third floor near the HUG Clinic.
A virtual ribbon cutting ceremony is being planned for October.
