Eligible students at GateWay Community College (GWCC) are receiving emergency funds from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, starting May 11, 2020 and will continue through the week of May 18.
The CARES Act allocated more than $2.7 million to GWCC, with approximately half going directly to students. Called the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF), eligible GateWay students will receive approximately $535 each. Students were eligible to qualify for HEERF funding, based on the federal guidelines.
Students who received the funding were identified based eligibility guidelines provided by the Department of Education, such as U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, have a Social Security number, registered with Selective Services (males only), and have a high school diploma, GED, or completed high school in an approved homeschool setting. Additional requirements are displayed here under the FAQ section.
Students will receive the funds as an electronic bank transfer if they are already signed up for that, or a check will be mailed to their homes.
