Featured #GateWayGrad Makiya Badada
When Makiya started her educational journey at Gateway, she had more to balance than just school. She had to juggle her coursework, her job, and being a single mom. She was worried about finding a job and how she would manage her son's schedule. But, she was able to get a job at GateWay working as an office assistance. Through the support of that job, and GateWay faculty and staff, she received help and support along the way.
Taking advantage of the resources that GateWay had to offer, she was the recipient of the Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars Program and Helping Hands Program. This financial support allowed Mikiya to continue her education and has helped countless other students finish their degrees and achieve their dreams.
When asked about her time at GateWay, Makiya said, "GateWay has tremendously contributed to my life. The great support I received from faculty and staff has pushed me not only to excel as a student, but also in my personal and professional life. As a student, I was grateful for the Learning Center and Career Center, whether I was looking for math help or a new job at GateWay, I always had someone who was willing to help. My time at GateWay has pushed me to aim high and dream big. I am beyond grateful for the amazing experiences I have had as a GateWay student.
In the future, Makiya will be attending ASU to pursue her bachelor and master degree in higher education. After excelling at GateWay and achieving her associate’s degree, Makiya added "I know anything is possible. I am no longer scared. I am eager to dream big because of the support and my community at GateWay. I want to give back by creating opportunities for students like myself. I want to create scholarships and programs to assist students through their college journey. I believe in the power of education and supporting my community and peers." Congratulations Makiya!
