Two GateWay Community College students earned the Chancellor’s Civic Leadership Medallion this year. Paulina Cuevas, a Sociology major at the Washington Campus, and Magida “Maggie” Jaber, a Medical Assisting Student at SouthWest Skill Center, will be recognized at the Medallion Luncheon May 3, at Phoenix College.
The Chancellor’s Civic Leadership Medallion recognizes students who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to civic leadership on their campus and in the community.
Paulina Cuevas’s volunteer experience was limited prior to coming to college, but when she enrolled at GateWay, she became excited as she was introduced to student life activities.
Right from the start, Cuevas knew she needed to get involved, she says.
Since then, Cuevas has supported GateWay Student Activity Management (SAM) Council events. She helps with set up and behind the scenes tasks, like contracts, to make sure everything is ready to go and the event runs smoothly.
“It’s exciting getting to meet so many different people,” Cuevas says.
Cuevas participated in a Leadership Retreat last summer, and plans to continue her civic service.
While Cuevas focuses much of her support on internal campus/college causes, Maggie Jaber lends her support to her local community.
Jaber volunteers with Friends of Avondale to help create activities for the community. She’s assisted with event set up during local festivals, and even partook in a character appearance for a Kids’ Fest.
It’s safe to assume Jaber’s community service will continue on after she graduates this May.
“I’m at my greatest when I’m volunteering. Helping others is my passion,” she says. “To make a difference in someone’s life is the biggest reward of all.”
