The GateWay Community College baseball season comes to a close after losing the series to Scottsdale Community College last weekend. It was a tough loss, but up until the last strike of the season, GateWay Geckos baseball team fought hard to make it to the NJCAA World Series.
At the beginning of May, the Geckos qualified for the first round of Region I Div II playoffs against the Phoenix College Bears. After winning the series, they went on to compete against the Scottsdale Artichokes.
In the series opener on Thursday, the Artichokes won 4-1. The Geckos made a comeback the next day winning game two 3-1. GateWay had high hopes for the last game that would advance them to the NJCAA World Series in Enid, Okla. The last time GateWay went to the World Series was in 2011.
Unfortunately, the Artichokes scored five runs in the first inning leading the Geckos 5-1.
GateWay made a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring two more runs trailing 5-3. The score stayed there due to strong defense, but GateWay’s offense came up short without scoring any additional runs. Artichokes won 5-3.
The season has come to a close, but thanks go to Head Coach Rob Shabansky, the assistant coaches, the baseball players, and families for their hard work and perseverance this season.
