Former GateWay Community College infielder Mike Felton is on his way to win the TD Ameritrade Fan’s Choice Award — all he needs now is your vote.

Each year the public votes for one college baseball player to be honored as part of the College Home Run Derby at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. The Fan’s Choice Award is given to one player who demonstrated teamwork, leadership and integrity among their teammates, school and community, according to the College Home Run Derby website.

Felton is among 15 college baseball players from across the country to be chosen as one of the nominees. He needs to remain in first place in order to be recognized at the College Home Run Derby on July 3, which ESPN will air on July 4.

You can vote once a day on College Home Run Derby’s Facebook page every day from May 31 until June 19 to help Felton win first place.

The Tempe, Ariz. native graduated from GateWay in 2011 and helped GateWay compete in the 2011 NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla. for the first time in GateWay Athletics’ history.  He is currently a senior infielder at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. and will graduate this December.

This nomination means a lot to Felton.

“I felt blessed just to be mentioned for this award,” Felton said.

Head baseball coach Rob Shabansky said he is proud Felton carried on his integrity and leadership even after his time at GateWay.

“As far as being honored nationally, I think that speaks volume of his character,” Shabansky said. “It would be a tremendous honor and way to end his college career.”
