On Feb. 10, Valley Christian Centers, a South Phoenix nonprofit, held its 2nd Annual Senior Prom at the George Washington Carver Museum. VCC raised $6,400, which will be used toward its programs, such as computer classes for senior citizens, afterschool activities, nutrition classes, and food boxes for the homeless, which support seniors and families in economic need.
Rebecca Castro, executive director of VCC, was grateful to the 180 people who bought tickets and the companies that sponsored the event.
“We had a great crowd, and everyone had a great time,” she said. “The money raised from Senior Prom will help Valley Christian Centers to help those in the community that need our services. I am also happy that guests were able to relive their proms and have fun with family and friends.”
Guests danced to the energetic music of Higher Power and hoped to win raffle prizes like an oil change from Goodyear Auto Service or an eyebrow wax from Studio Nails. Vendors, such as Blue Fin, Comedor Guadalajara, Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Cafe, La Canasta, and Z’s Greek, supplied the food. Divine Transportation provided travel to Senior Prom. Prior to the event, some attendees received makeovers at Maricopa Skill Center, where Cosmetology students transformed their hair and nails.
Many local organizations supported Senior Prom, either through the purchase of a sponsorship or donation of services. Some contributors included Friendly House, Victoria Foundation, Tanner Community Development Corporation, African-American Strategic Leadership Group, Cricket Wireless and Senior Living at Henson Village. Senior Prom would not have been successful without the support of the community.
