This course provides a foundational understanding of healthcare education as a discipline. It offers an orientation to essential healthcare concepts, such as patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, and evidence-based practice. Students will explore the distinctions between healthcare education and general educational practices, developing the skills needed for a future career as a healthcare professions educator. Students will be equipped with a strong foundation in healthcare education and the skills required to effectively teach and prepare future healthcare professionals.

Ethics and Diversity in Healthcare Educational Settings

January 16, 2024 - February 16, 2024

This educational class explores ethics and diversity within the healthcare education setting. It examines fundamental concepts such as culture, ethnocentrism, stereotypes, equity, and equality. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of culturally responsive teaching in fostering student learning and reviews legal terminology and attributes. This course demonstrates the importance of setting an ethical example in the classroom and highlights how these actions influence healthcare education.

Curriculum Design and Teaching in Healthcare Education

July 1, 2024 - August 2, 2024

Curriculum Design and Teaching in Healthcare Education aims to equip clinical educators, administrators, and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to design and implement effective curriculum and instructional materials from the ground up while keeping the learner in mind.  Having a good understanding of learning theories and how students learn is important when designing and developing curriculum and lessons for didactic and clinical practice.  It is also important to incorporate and align any local, state, or national standards, including any governing or accreditation body standards.   In this course, clinical educators, administrators and healthcare professionals will design and develop curriculum maps utilizing healthcare accreditation and postsecondary education accreditation standards.  Participants will also develop lesson plans for courses within their model curriculum and align the learning objectives to standards such as state and accreditation bodies.  Whether you are an educator, administrator, or healthcare professional, this course will empower you to make a meaningful impact on the education and training of future healthcare professionals.

Assessment and Evaluation in Clinical Education

April 1, 2024 - May 4, 2024

Assessment and Evaluation in Clinical Education is designed to equip healthcare professionals, educators, preceptors, and administrators with the essential knowledge and skills required to develop and implement effective assessment and evaluation strategies in a clinical education setting.   Assessment of student learning is necessary in any academic program to determine overall student performance, however in health sciences, there are additional requirements or standards from accreditation bodies that must also be considered.  This course will explore the foundations of assessment, evaluation methodologies, and the integration of these concepts into clinical education programs to ensure the competence and preparedness of future healthcare practitioners.  Participants will receive hands-on application in developing tools and resources that can be used in their classrooms such as construction of student learning outcomes, developing an assessment map and cycle to collect data, analyzing and interpreting data, and how to inform decision making to improve student learning and performance.  Whether you are a healthcare educator, clinical preceptor, or administrator, this course will empower you to foster the development and competence of healthcare professionals through evidence-based assessment and evaluation strategies.

Technology Integration and Design for Healthcare Education

May 13, 2024 - June 14, 2024

Technology Integration and Design for Healthcare Education is aimed at healthcare professionals transitioning to the classroom while exploring key elements needed to create a course in any Learning Management System. It equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to design, implement, and optimize technology-enhanced learning experiences in the healthcare field. This course recognizes the pivotal role of technology in healthcare education and empowers educators to not only integrate technology but also design courses that include essential elements and considerations that should be incorporated to ensure the course is meaningful, effective and engaging.

Research Methods for Healthcare Education

April 1, 2024 - May 4, 2024

This course introduces students to the essential research methods in the context of health professions education. Covering qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research, it explores the ethical considerations, peer-reviewed assessment, and institutional review boards associated with educational research. Students will develop the critical thinking skills needed to evaluate research effectively, ensuring they become well-informed and ethical consumers of educational research. This foundational course equips future professionals in the health professions education field with the knowledge and tools necessary to contribute to meaningful advancements in the field while upholding ethical standards.

Practicum in Healthcare Education

Practicum in Healthcare Education serves as the culmination of the participant’s academic journey in healthcare education.  This course is designed to synthesize, integrate, and/or apply the knowledge and concepts from courses within the Health Science Education program to prepare participants for roles in healthcare education.  This hands-on experience enables participants to develop a course that will be taught to a group of peers, educators, or a live class.  Participants will develop the curriculum, lesson plans, assignments, and assessments, and execute it through delivering their lesson.  Lessons will include a variety of instructional methods and strategies, application, feedback, engagement with the learner, assessment of learning, and an evaluation of instructional effectiveness.  Successful completion of this practicum will demonstrate their readiness to lead, innovate, and contribute significantly to the field of healthcare education.

The Certificate of Completion of Health Professions Education has an identified pathway for students to achieve a Bachelor of Science in Education, Career and Technical Education (90/30) as well as a Master of Education, Career and Technical Education at Northern Arizona University.
