Phillip M. Burford Respiratory Therapist Scholarship
Philip Michael Burford RRT, is a graduate of Maricopa Technical Community College, now GateWay Community College Respiratory Therapist class of 1974. He began his clinical career at Maryvale Samaritan Hospital. He quickly rose to become the Director of the Cardiopulmonary Department. He then became a full-time faculty member at Gateway Community College. He returned to clinical work at Good Samaritan Hospital and St. Joseph's Medical Center. It is there where he was recognized for his extraordinary clinical work in Neonatology, mechanical ventilation, neonatal air transport, and a pioneer in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). He spoke at many conferences on his work and the field of ECMO. He passed at the early age of 56 on February 21, 2004. Phillip was born in Joliet, IL, before making Arizona his home in 1970. He was also a U.S. Air Force Veteran.
