Jackson Weller Memorial Scholarship
On May 4, 2019, the world tragically lost Jackson Weller to an act of senseless violence in Albuquerque, NM. In his 23 years, Jackson accomplished a lot and experienced more than most would in a typical lifetime. Beyond his passion to play baseball, Jackson is remembered for his capacity to put others first, always lending a hand and giving to those less fortunate.
In the days following the loss of Jackson, we discovered a list of his goals in a notebook placed on his nightstand. His goals included becoming a professional baseball player, graduate with a Masters Degree, raise a large family and make a lasting impact on the world. Jackson has indeed made a lasting impact on the world. His case remains top of mind as New Mexico law enforcement and legislators work to reduce violent crime.
Jackson played for the GateWay Community College Geckos for two years before transferring to the University of New Mexico. He was a gifted ball player, but his life is characterized by his many positive attributes. He overcame learning disabilities to become an Honor Student. He never gave up on himself, despite a UCL injury and two subsequent Tommy John surgeries. Even more important, he NEVER gave up on his teammates and his friends. No matter how difficult the challenge, Jackson would always carry on and push through exhibiting courage, perseverance, resilience and adaptability.
At Jackson’s core was his faith, his family and friends. His goal of leaving a person better than he found them has become an inspiration for many. In standing up the Jackson Weller Memorial Fund, we hope to extend Jackson’s memory and his attributes. Jackson deeply loved life and doing things for those he loved and those who were strangers. This scholarship is meant to reward but also carry out his goal of “making a lasting impact on the world”.
